Medical Cannabis in New Jersey

Program overview

New Jersey operates the New Jersey Medicinal Cannabis Program, administered by New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.

How New Jersey’s law developed

New Jersey's Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act was signed in January 2010, in the final hours of Governor Corzine's term, and then spent years in a slow and contested implementation under his successor. The first dispensary did not open until December 2012. The Jake Honig Compassionate Use Medical Cannabis Act of 2019 substantially restructured the program: it raised possession limits, phased out patient fees for veterans and seniors, removed the requirement that physicians register publicly, and moved oversight toward what became the Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Voters legalised adult use in November 2020. New Jersey permits registered caregivers and, unusually, allows a patient to designate more than one, but the state does not permit home cultivation by patients or caregivers under any circumstance.
